Overview: Nortel Networks Alteon SSL VPN is a remote access security solution that extends the reach of enterprise applications to mobile workers, telecommuters, partners, and customers. By using secure sockets layer (SSL) as the underlying security protocol, the Alteon SSL VPN allows for truly unrestricted remote access - using the Internet for remote connectivity and the ubiquitous Web browser as the client interface. SSL is supported by virtually all Web servers and Web browsers, making it the defacto standard for securing Internet communications and an ideal remote access VPN technology. SSL operates at the session layer to secure data on behalf of higher layer applications. These secure sessions don't interfere with lower layer services and are universally regarded as standard Web traffic. SSL sessions are supported by nearly all-private and public networks. SSL uses public key cryptography in combination with embedded Web browser technology to establish secure sessions from any live Web browser to any SSL supported application. By incorporating session proxy technology, the Alteon SSL VPN solution expands the breadth of supported applications beyond HTTP, FTP, POP3, SMTP, IMAP, and Telnet.
